. Zakopane is a town in southern Poland on the border with Slovakia. The town is part of the area populated by the Polish mountain shepards known as Gorals. The town is a very popular winter and summer vacation destination. It is known winter sports and summer hiking. Many of the houses in the town are built in a unique style seen on the ornament.  The Giewont  mountain overlooks the town and has a huge cross on it’s summit. As an avid skier, mountain climber and camper, Pope John Paul II have frequently visited the town, and also visited it on his trips to Poland as a Pope.
