Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa glass Christmas ornament

Glass Christmas ornament of Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous work the Mona Lisa , in Italian  La Gioconda.  The beautiful woman with the mysterious smile and the eyes that follow the onlooker everywhere was painted by Da Vinci as a commission probably between 1503-1506. The woman in the painting is believed to be the noblewoman Lisa  Gherardini, the wife of Fracesco del Giocondo, whose married name will be Lisa del Giocondo according to the Louvre. It was acquired by King Francis I of France and now the property of French republic, on permanent display in the Louvre since 1797.   The image of the Mona Lisa has a strong resemblance to many Renaissance depictions of the Virgin Mary that was consider the ideal of womanhood. The Mona Lisa sits upright in an armchair, with folded arms a symbol of reserved posture. Her gaze is fixed on the onlooker. The Mona Lisa seems alive and some would even say that portrait eyes do move in the direction of the observer. She is attired in traditional 16th century noble women cloths. She wears a brown dress with square neckline with gold embroidery at the edge. And on her left shoulder is a green golden scarf thrown. Considering the age of the painting the dark colors may have been originally slightly lighter, and has darkened with age. The Mona Lisa achieved popular fame in the 20th century after repeated attempts to steal the painting form the Louvre. But already in the Renaissance period it was highly honored, and there is a drawing of the painting by Rafael c. 1505.

Our ornament is true to the painting, The Mona Lisa is sitting upright, in a half length portrait, like the master did. On the bottom of the ornament is a signature of Leonardo Da vinci.
