Description

19 1/2 x 9  x 13 1/4″ lit nativity with moving elements and figures.

One of a kind szopka from the 76th edition of the  Krakow Nativities competition in the small nativities category. By 4th generation szopka artist, who brings a breath of fresh air to the glorious tradition.  The nativity adhere to classical Krakow nativity tradition that appear in almost all nativities such as  the steeple of the St. Mary basilica, and the dome of the Wavel chapel. In addition it contain  some  industrial  architectural and landmarks  as well as  famous bridges on which the street car passes.  On the ground level of the nativity  we see the arched opening alluding to the city bridges under which are the street cars on platforms that move around. There are 19 figures in the nativity in addition to the Holy Family that is on the balcony above the second level hailed by the shepherd with a flock of sheep. In the nativity we also find king Herod, and Krakow legendary folk figures such as the Lajkojnik (the half man half horse), and Pan Twardoski , the gurals, and Krakowiaks.  2018  is  the centennial  of Poland’s regaining its independence after over a century of partition between Germany, Austria and Russia, as well  as the year in which the Krakow nativities were  added to UNESCO world heritage, both of which are celebrated in the szopka by the flag holding angels on the two side towers of the nativity which are the crowned steeples of the St. Mary basilica. There are two angels with trumpet alluding to the hajna  player in the window of the steeple of the St. Mary basilica .The Wavel copula is above the Holy Family crowned on the top with a beautiful star, and also shows up as the central tower at the top of the nativity with the Polish national eagle on top. There are so many details and allusions to Krakow history, folk and tradition in the nativity that  a long essay can be written about it. Anyone who will buy  it will undoubtedly will keep finding more interesting details for years to come.
