The original hippo made of clay was found in an Egyptian tomb where it was placed to guarantee the birth of the deceased.  It dates to about 1681-1878 B.C. It was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other museums, where it became a beloved object.  In 1931 it was mentioned in a magazine story with the name William which has stuck. The adorable hippo is turquoise a popular Egyptian color choice, with black lotuses leaves covering its body.
