Blown glass Christmas ornament of the beautiful Egyptian blue hippo, sometimes called William the hippo. The original hippo made of clay was found in an Egyptian tomb where it was placed to guarantee the birth of the deceased.  It dates to about 1681-1878 B.C. It was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other museums, where it became a beloved object.  In 1931 it was mentioned in a magazine story with the name William which has stuck. The adorable hippo is turquoise a popular Egyptian color choice, with black lotuses leaves covering its body. The lotus were abundant in the rivers where the hippo lived, and symbolize regeneration as the flower closes at night and reopens in the morning. The Egyptian hippo has kind face and protruding big eyes, and big smiling mouth
